Using a lesson idea from an As Physics scheme of work I use sweets to help students get used to using words to describe the properties of materials. The main thing is make sure that there is enough variety in the sweets and to get the students to explain how they know the sweet is tough, stiff, brittle, malleable, ductile, or hard.
Use a strawberry lace is a nice alternative to the lesson on stretching a spring or rubber band to draw force-extention graphs and work out stress-strain.
